10th Grade US Syllabus
Course Description: This course surveys the geographic, archeological, political, military, diplomatic, economic, and cultural developments of the
Class Format: The teaching method is primarily short lecture and discussion, either in the whole or in small groups. Test questions will be drawn from lectures, discussion, and homework. It is imperative that students take notes. NOTE: TAPE RECORDERS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED IN MY CLASS; their use here is an honor council violation.
Daily Assignments: All students receive an assignment sheet for the year, both hard copy and on my web site. Once an assignment is completed, the student moves to the next assignment. Homework assignments must be completed BY class time of the day assigned. Weekly assignment sheets are posted on the web.
Tests and Grades:
A. Tests will be given every chapter or two. They usually will contain two parts: objective (identification, multiple choice, matching, map) which will count about 75% of the test; 25% will be short essay with outline. Old tests may NOT be taken home.
B. Homework will be checked by daily quizzes. These checks will be supplemented by checks on video material, lectures, and other assignments. There will be no make-ups or late submission of homework. NOTE: Homework must be thorough and complete; otherwise it is a zero.
C. Papers will be graded and averaged into your quarter grade.
D. Grading will be calculated according to a "test" standard. In addition to tests, homework will be factored in, equal to one or two tests, while research papers may equal one-half a quarter grade.
Papers: Students will follow History Department policy, which requires one written assignment per quarter. This is usually in the form of book reports, research papers or projects, essays, or genealogy papers. Adhere precisely to my rules for these.
Makeup Tests: I strongly encourage all students to keep up with homework and to take tests on time. Makeup tests may differ significantly from regularly scheduled tests. Makeup tests NOT taken within week of the student's return will be counted as a ZERO.
Office Hours: If a student is having any difficulty, see me immediately. My office is located on the second floor of the library. My office hours are posted outside my office.
My Classroom: Proper deportment will never become antiquated in my classes. Each student must adhere to gentlemanly conduct toward everyone in our class. Unseemly behavior will be dealt with harshly. My goal is to encourage openness, participation and critical thinking and analysis.
