National Latin Exam

Date: Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Time: Students may begin to report to the testing area at 2:15 PM. Testing will begin promptly at 2:30. The testing period will last 40 minutes. Anyone arriving late will not be granted extended time.

Place: Latin One and Two will be in the Dining Hall. Latin Three, Four, and Five will be in the Wunderlich Auditorium.

What to Bring: A couple of sharpened number two pencils. Books / bookbags may not be brought into the testing area.

Important Procedural Note: Before each student enters his assigned testing area, he will pick up a scantron (filled out previously in class) and an exam. Each student must keep his exam covered up with his scantron and may NOT look at the exam until the proctors give permission for testing to begin at 2:30 PM. Failure to follow these instructions would result in an honor violation.

Latin Honor Society

As the third quarter winds down, here's a reminder about the honor society:

1. Upper School students must have a 90 average in Latin; Lower School students must have a 92. This average is determined by the following formula:

(Q1 + Q2 + S.EXAM1 + Q3) / 4

2. All candidates must be current JCL members.

3. The Latin Honor Society runs on a year-to-year basis; there is no "lifetime" membership.

Another Reminder About the TJCL Convention

The registration deadline is Tuesday, February 23.

To clarify:

A completed poem or essay (with a cover sheet) MUST BE TURNED IN together with the two permission slips.

Up to this point, no one who has attempted to turn in registration paperwork has followed these instructions, and therefore, at this point, we have no delegates signed up for the trip.

Please follow all of the instructions carefully.

Third Quarter Progress Reports

As everyone probably knows by now, the school has been experiencing some severe server problems, and the progress reports we recorded for this quarter have been deleted.

I've e-mailed the parents of all students who had a C- or below. If anyone else would like a grade update, just let me know.

On the right is the Roman miles from Chapter Twenty of Ecce Romani (2009 edition).

The publication credits of Ecce Romani acknowledge neither HBO nor the actor.

TJCL Reminder

A reminder that the convention registration deadline is approaching - Tuesday, February 23. This is open to JCL members who have maintained an A average in Latin One or at least a strong B average in Upper School Latin.

Androcles and the Lion

Soon after Spring Break, all of my Latin Two students will need to read "Androcles and the Lion," a play by George Bernard Shaw. (This will correspond to Chapter 49 in our textbook.)

For those who are comfortable with nothing more than an electronic file, Project Gutenberg has a copy of the play posted here. For those who would like a traditional published copy, Amazon offers a variety of editions, with prices starting at around 75 cents. If you plan to order, go ahead and take care of this now.

TJCL State Convention Scholarship

TJCL is offering some scholarship money for the upcoming state convention. As of now, no one has applied for the money.

If you'd like to apply, the deadline is next Friday, February 5. Follow the instructions outlined in the convention packet.

Medusa Mythology Exam - Reminder

I'll be sending off the application for this exam next week, so anyone who would like to take it needs to let me know ASAP. It's open to all levels of Latin.

This is sort of like the National Latin Exam, except that all of the questions pertain to classical mythology. This is good practice for the mythology exam at the TJCL convention, and it's also an opportunity to earn an impressive accolade for a resume / college application.

The exam will be administered at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, March 24.

2010 TJCL State Convention - Preliminary Information

It's time to start preparing for the Latin convention.

An information sheet and permission slips are posted here. Parents and students both should read all of this information carefully.

You can find the official convention web page here.

Academic testing study guides are posted here. Log in with your MUS user ID and password and look under the "Latin-JCL" course listing. You may be prompted for an additional password to access the information. (Hint: Think of owls back in ancient Italy.)

The sign-up deadline is Tuesday, February 23. Please don't wait until the last minute!

Reminder About Latin Honor Society

As we begin the new quarter, it may be a good idea to review the requirements for the Latin Honor Society:

1. JCL membership

2. 92 average in a Lower School Latin class; 90 average in an Upper School Latin class. This grade will be determined by the average of these four numbers: 1Q, 2Q, SEM EX, 3Q.

3. Membership runs on a year-to-year basis; there is no "lifetime" membership.

The awards ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, April 7 at 7:00 PM.
