Eligibility requirements:

1. The student must be a member of JCL.
2. The student must have earned a first semester A in Latin One or at least a strong B in Upper School Latin.
3. The student must have his Latin teacher's permission.

Participation requirements:

1. One pre-convention writing contest.
2. At least five academic tests.
3. One other competitive event.

Mr. Sellers Latin One students have the choice of either continuing on to Latin Two or switching to French One or Spanish One.  For motivated students who can handle more than five academic classes, it is perfectly fine to take more than one language (e.g., Latin Two and French One, Latin Two and Spanish One).  We recommend at least a strong B+ in Latin One to continue on to Latin Two.

For current Latin Three students, there are three options for next year:

1. AP Latin -- The College Board is redesigning AP Latin to include one semester of Caesar and one semester of Vergil.  We recommend an A in Latin Three to take AP.

2. Advanced Readings in Latin -- This will also be a brand new course in the MUS curriculum.  It is open to any student who has successfully completed either Latin Three or AP Latin.  (In other words, we're opening up the old Latin Five course to include regular Latin Four students, too.)  This course may be taken for either one or two semesters.  At least a B- in Latin Three is recommended.

3. The third option, of course, is not to take Latin at all.  Latin Three fulfills the MUS graduation requirement, so there is no requirement to move on. 

We'll be sending home course selection sheets in a couple of weeks - right around the time of third quarter progress reports.  In the meantime, please let me know if you have any questions.

Upper Level Certamen - The MUS A team won first place, with the MUS B team coming in second.

Roman World (Academic Test) - Yunhua Zhao placed first in the lower division, and Nicholas Rouse placed first in the upper division.  (For some unknown reason, only the first place winners were announced, so we don't know how many of our students finished second, third, etc.)

Overall, we had a strong showing at this event, and we hope to have just as much success at the state competition in the spring.

Mr. Sellers A reminder that all students (Upper School and Lower School) will be allowed to use a Latin-English dictionary on the sight translation portion of the semester exam.  (We're actually going to try doing this on the last regular class day of the semester this year.  But more on this later.)  Hopefully most of you already have a dictionary.  If not, however, now is the time to buy one.  I recommend the New College, but there are other ones on the market, too.

I will post the exam study guides here on the blog during the first week of December.

Mr. Sellers Rhodes College will again host the Festivus this year, a mini-convention for Memphis-area Latin students.  The event will take place on Saturday, November 19 from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM.  The event is open to all MUS Latin students.

Festivus Registration Form

All students who plan to attend the event need to fill out the registration form (both pages).  Do NOT send the form directly to Rhodes.  Instead, turn it in to me with the $5.00 payment no later than Wednesday, October 26.  Even if a student just plans to go to the Festivus for the social aspects of the event - which is perfectly fine to do - the form still must be completed, and the $5.00 fee still must be paid.
