November 2008 Archives
I will NOT be offering any special exam review sessions outside of normal class time. I will, however, be happy to meet with individual students or small groups of students by appointment.
This holiday season, the MUS JCL is participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree program. This is an excellent way for us to give back to the community . . . and yes, it will earn us some sweepstakes points at the JCL convention, too.
Lower School Angel:
- 6-year-old boy
- Needs clothes, games, books, and school supplies
- Sizes: shoes (2), shirt, sweater, and pants (6), coat (7)
- Special request -- a bicycle (please see me if you intend to purchase this)
Upper School Angel:
- Male senior citizen
- Suggested items: blankets, bath / kitchen towels, pots and pans, socks, gloves, toiletry items, Wal-Mart or Kroger gift cards, etc.
General Guidelines:
- Do NOT wrap the gifts
- No food, cash, candy, or personal notes
- All gifts must be given anonymously
- All gifts must be brand new
Please bring all gifts to the Latin Office by Wednesday, December 10.
Study guides have been posted in the "Handouts" section of this website.
Foreign language exams will be Thursday, December 18.
A reminder that there is a lot of scholarship money available each year from the NJCL, the NJCL Latin Honor Society, and the National Latin Exam. Excellence in Latin can definitely pay off . . . literally.
NJCL is also sponsoring a creative writing contest. (Entry deadline is February 13, 2009.) There is no prize money offered, but there may be some bonus points involved.
You can now watch the trailer of this highly-anticipated film, which is set in Rome and Vatican City. We'll have an official MUS JCL excursion to this movie in May.
For the semester exam (Thursday, December 18), all students will need to bring a Latin-English dictionary, which they will be allowed to use on the sight translation passage. Latin Three students already have a dictionary, but the Latin One students probably don't.
Though just about any inexpensive paperback would be fine, I would recommend the New College Latin and English Dictionary, currently published by Bantam. The most recent edition probably looks like this:
You can probably find a dictionary at a local Borders or Barnes and Noble store, or you could order a new or used one from Amazon or eBay.
I'll try to post exam study guides by the first week of December.
