Students in physical education are graded on both ability and effort. Each class meets four times a week with two days emphasizing aerobic conditioning (running on the track or agility exercises) and two days devoted to strength training (correct technique and workout circuit).
Every day that a student dresses out for Physical Education (proper uniform must be worn) he can earn 2 points toward his quarter grade based on his performance, effort and attitude in completing the designated daily activity. These daily points accumulate so that by the end of the quarter grading period he will have earned approximately 54 to 60 daily points. The remainder of his quarter grade comes from the percentile score on the President’s Council Youth Fitness test which consists of the following seven activities: pull-ups, sit-ups, standing long jump, sit and reach, 50-yard dash, mile run, and basketball throw. This test is usually administered during the middle of each quarter.
A student who is unexcused and/or fails to participate will not only lose points for that day, but will lose additional points based on the following schedule:
First offense -------------------- 2 point deduction |
Second offense ---------------- 2 point deduction |
Third offense ------------------- 3 point deduction |
Fourth offense ----------------- 4 point deduction |
Fifth offense -------------------- 5 point deduction |
All subsequent offenses ---- 5 point deduction |
These points will be deducted from his quarterly grade. A student will be excused only if he has a note from a parent or physician stating a medical reason why he cannot participate in Physical Education that day.
On days not dressed out, the student will still be required to do some form of work for the instructor. Students are not excused when they forget their clothes or want to study.
You will receive, usually with the report card, a summary of your son’s physical fitness test. Included on this report will be your son’s height, weight.
