Lost in Translation
Mac to PC & Office 2010 to 2003

Mac to PC - strange characters when printing

Problem:

Your document looks okay on your screen but when you print it, you get garbage characters.

Solution:

Select All (Edit menu) and change the Font to any that you want to use.

Why it happens:

There are certain fonts that both platforms use, but they are slightly different, so the printer does not interpret them correctly.

Office 2010 to Office 2003 - spacing issues

Problem:

A Word document created in 2010 and saved in the docx format messes up spacing when opened with a computer using Office 2003 with a converter. It adds space after each line where the Enter key has been used.

Solution:

Select All (Edit menu) and go to the Format menu, Paragraph, and change Spacing After to be 0.

Why it happens:

Word interprets anything between line breaks as a paragraph. It can be one word long or many words. You get a line break when you hit the Enter key on the keyboard. In the conversion between a document created in Word 2010 and 2003 the spacing between paragraphs gets changed to 10pt after.

I will insert a screenshot below.

Change the 10 pt after to 0.

Office 2010 at School and Office 2003 at Home

If you create the document at school and need to work on it at home also, save it as an earlier version.

Go to the File tab, Save As and choose Word 97-2003 in the Save as type box.
