Remote Access to Files

FTP to My Documents

Did you ever forget to email a document home from school and then need to use it?
With FTP (File Transfer Protocol) you can now access your school files remotely. 1st  you will need to download a program to your home machine to help with the file transfer. I have linked a couple of free programs below.

FTP Client

Windows

 Mac

To Use the Programs

Students     External address (or Host):  ftp://Atlas.musowls.org

Username & password: same as on campus. If you have any trouble, try putting musschool\ in front of
     the account name.

Ex. below   User: john.doe    Account: john.doe     (or musschool\john.doe)

The settings will be similar in all programs. I will use Filezilla in this example. You can create a new connection (or modify an old one) by going to File, Site Manager, New site.

If you have problems connecting, click the Advanced button (or Transfer Settings tab if you have version 3.1.5) and try Use Active or Default.

You will need a local folder to copy the document to. Then work on it outside of FileZilla to make changes. Finally, back in FileZilla, copy to local one to the Network folder (My Documents at MUS).

Be sure to Disconnect when thru.

 Example with Filezilla

___________
File Structure

In most of the FTP client programs you will have a window with a pane for files on the computer you are using and one for the files that are on your campus directory.

When you double-click the remote file, you will transfer it to your local computer. You can also copy a document from your local machine to the remote folder. I will insert an image of Filezilla and a few tips below. For more information refer to the Tutorial links above.

You will click on this folder to move up one level in the folder hierarchy

I created a new folder on my Local Site (home computer) to receive the files I downloaded.

The top left panel shows all drives on your local computer. The next pane under it shows the particular folder you have sellected to download to.

The right panel shows the files and folders on the remote site (school documents)

Disconnect: In FileZilla you go to the File menu and click Disconnect.
