Online Education

Clicks and Mortar

"Distance education is one of the fastest-growing -- and most controversial -- parts of higher education.”   -- Chronicle of Higher Education

Graduate

Pepperdine University &  Leslie University

Factors that contributed to a good online course for Sue and Judy

  • a mixture of in-person and online

  • a committed student body – rigorous admission standards

  • community building - We went through all classes with the same group, so that there was a impetus
to bond and work cooperatively with other members of the class.

  • reputable university – all online degrees are not viewed equally; reputation of the Institution is probably
one of the most critical factors; avoid virtual papermill schools.

Communication
  • Newsgroup   http://news.pepperdine.edu and select Newsgroups Web. For classes, we used Netscape Navigator 4.7 for newsgroups because of its user-friendly format. This page gives a different view, but requires a password. This example, which will not require a password, is of a threaded discussion in a newsgroup from an example by World Crossing.

  • Tapped In http://www.tappedin.org/

From the TappedIn site
TAPPED IN is the online workplace of an international community of education professionals. K-12 teachers and librarians, professional development staff, teacher education faculty and students, and researchers engage in professional development programs and informal collaborative activities with colleagues. Guests are welcome, and membership is free.

Undergraduate

Idyllic versus reality
We all picture the ultimate image of a college that either we grew up with or wished we had grown up with. Due to location and jobs, the reality for some is that they are not participating in a removed, four-year college experience. According to Educational Services of the South, the average age of a college student is now 27, not 18 to 22. Many universities are using online courses to augment a program of traditional classes.

Example – UT  http://www.outreach.utk.edu/deis/

What’s Available

Virtual Universities (These are simply examples. Their inclusion does not indicate quality.)

Western Governors University
California Virtual University
University of Phoenix Online

Undergraduate and High School - my opinion - It is best used to supplement in-person education.

High School

Virtual Schools: Trends and Issues by Dr. Tom Clark of TA (a consulting study commissioned by DLRN)

Highlights of this study include the following facts:

  • The trend from ‘virtual high schools’ to ‘virtual K-12 schools’ continues

  • An estimated 40,000 to 50,000 students will enroll in a virtual school course in 2001-2002

  • The most common tuition reported was $300/semester, but prices varied greatly

  • Calculus AB was the online AP course offered by the most schools

Virtual High School http://www.govhs.org/website.nsf

From Wired article
The Virtual High School, a collaborative of national high schools that is financed by a five-year, US$7.8 million Department of Education Technology Challenge Grant, offers participating schools NetCourses in exchange for teaching time. Students can explore nontraditional courses from music appreciation to aeronautics, classes that could not otherwise be offered because of low enrollment.

From the Virtual High School Website
VHS, Inc. operates as a non-profit organization, which charges tuition for professional development and an annual membership fee to all participating schools. This will provide for central administration, registration, server management, and all the other operational aspects of VHS. This fee is $6000 per year for schools offering one NetCourse. Additional courses that are sponsored by the school are $4000 per year. Each NetCourse that a school sponsors and teaches earns that school 20 student seats in both the fall and spring VHS courses.

 Class.com  http://www.class.com/

From Wired article
…a commercial spin-off of the University of Nebraska that provides virtual courses to high schools. Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Lincoln, Nebraska, class.com builds partnerships with school districts, consortiums, and individual high schools in order to provide quality education for students via the Internet.

The Education Program for Gifted Youth http://www-epgy.stanford.edu/epgy/

From EPGY website
(EPGY) at Stanford University is a continuing project dedicated to developing and offering multimedia computer-based distance-learning courses. Combining technical and instructional expertise, EPGY provides high ability students of all ages with an individualized educational experience, optimized in both pace and content. Through EPGY, students have access to courses in a variety of subjects at levels ranging from kindergarten through advanced-undergraduate.

K12 Education for a Lifetime    http://www.k12.com/

K12 is the somewhat controversial school being started by former Secretary of Education William Bennett and other conservative educators. The school has started with programs for K-2, but plans to add through the 12th grade by 2004. Even though the program targets home schoolers, it is also trying to partner with charter schools.
