Use Excel to Create an Interactive Quiz

Create the quiz

Use row A to type your heading and any instructions.

In cell B3, type the word Problem.

In C3, type Enter Solution.

In cell A4 type #1

In cell B4 type your problem. For the example I have put 3+2.

In cell D4 enter the following formula

            =IF(C4="","",IF(C4=5,"good","bad"))

This is, of course, only an example. You will substitute the correct answer and whatever comment you wish to make.

Replace only the information I have put in red (and underlined) below.

            =IF(C4="","",IF(C4=5,"good","bad"))

Sample quiz

Next use the fill handle to copy the information in cell D4 to the cells below it (relative to their position.) You will need to change the answer to reflect the correct value for each question.  You grab the fill handle by pointing to the square in the lower right-hand corner of the cell until you get a cross-hatch. Then click and drag.

Formatting

Select cells to be formatted and go to Format, Cells. Choose Patterns to select a background color. Choose Borders to add borders between the cells. I also selected some cells and changed the alignment to center.

Widen columns by pointing to the line between column headings (gray with letters at the top.) When you get a double-arrow, click and drag to increase the size. Rows are enlarged in the same manner.

Hide the toolbars

Go to View, Full Screen

Protect the sheet so instructor information can not be changed.

Select the cells where answers will be entered. Click Format, Cells, Protection and click the check box so that locked is not selected.

When you have completed the worksheet, you will select Tools, Protection, Protect Sheet. You can enter a password if you like. To Unprotect the sheet so that you can work on it some more, go to the same menu.

If you want students to use this document, they will need to have a copy of Excel on their machine.
