Class policies

Personal Conduct:
I expect students to behave as gentlemen in my class and elsewhere.  More specifically, I expect students
*to prepare for class by completing assignments (before arrival) and any other study required for understanding the designated material,
*to arrive to class in a timely manner with all necessary materials, ready to stay in class for the duration of the period,
*to engage in class activities or discussions but without dominating said activity to the exclusion of others,
*to respond appropriately and respectfully to the input of other students and of the teacher, keeping in mind that personal beliefs and characteristics may create great differences of opinion,
*to listen attentively to the input of other students and the teacher even if no response is necessary or appropriate,
*to refrain from eating, drinking or chewing gum during the class,
*to refrain from making comments that belittle individuals or groups of people,
*to display good manners with respect to personal habits.

Electronic translation:
The use of electronic devices (hand held, on-line, etc) to translate work bypasses a student's need to show his mastery of vocabulary and grammar.  It is considered a violation of the Honor Code.

Binder:
Keep all homework & classwork assignments and handouts in your folder in the order in which they are assigned/handed out.
Maintain 3 sections in your binder: vocabulary, handouts/notes, and homework/classwork.
Label each page in the upper right hand corner with your name, the date and assignment.
You are encouraged to keep any returned materials (such as quizzes) in the folder as well.
Do not keep other subject matter in your Spanish folder.
Classwork:
All students are expected to participate in class in such activities as listening, repeating Spanish words, sounds or conversations, reading in Spanish, writing in Spanish, working with a partner or team, etc.
Homework:
Homework is assigned each day.  Students should keep all work organized in their folders or workbooks.  Homework should be corrected with a red pen in class.  Assignments may be collected for a homework grade at any time.
Testing:
Tests are given at the end of each unit (every 2-3 weeks).
Vocabulary tests will be given each week on a designated day.
Exams are given at the end of each semester and will include all material covered during that semester.
Unannounced quizzes may be given at any time.
Any student who scores a D or F on a test should immediately make an appointment to review the test individually with the teacher.
Grading:
For each quarter students will earn points in the following categories:  unit tests, quizzes, homework, classwork, conversation, projects, participation, etc.
All earned points will be added and divided by the total number of points possible (usually 800-1000)
tests = 100+ points (usually 3-4 per quarter)
vocab quizzes = 20 points each (weekly)
          oral proficiency = 50-75 points
essays (for Acc Spanish II) = 25 points each
homework (when collected) = 20-40 points each

For example:  John has the following scores
42/50 (vocab qz), 18/20 (daily qz), 35/35 (hw), 28/35 (daily qz), 102/115 (test)
To calculate his average, John adds 42+18+28+102 and divides by 50+20+35+35+115.
Any 'random bonus points' go into John's cache only.

Percentage-wise, (roughly)
Regular section - tests/quizzes 65-70%, oral work 15%, other homework/writing assignments 15%
Accelerated class - tests/quizzes 65%, oral work 15%, essays/journal 15%, other 5%

Semester grades are calculated according to school policy:  the semester exam is worth 2/8 of the grade, and the first and second quarter grades are each worth 3/8 of the semester grade.
Make-up work and extra help:
Make up work will be accepted from students with an excused absence.
Homework assignments should be completed within a day of the student's return unless other arrangements are made with the instructor.
Missed tests should be made up in the same time frame and should be scheduled with the teacher immediately upon return.
All make-up work is the responsibility of the student.
I am available to work with students on an individual basis by appointment.  Please speak with me during class or Tuesdays during OP, or email me at home so that we can arrange a time to work.
